HISTORY OF VORNADO REALTY TRUST
- The Two Guys discount store chain is founded in 1947 by Sidney and Herbert Hubschman. In 1959 the company buys O.A. Sutton Corporation, a manufacturer of Vornado electric fans. Two Guys is renamed Vornado, Inc. Five years later Vornado owns more than 200 stores. In the early 1970’s the company divests its retail operations.
- In 1980 Interstate Properties, Inc. purchases 18 percent stake in Vornado and a year later it takes over the company entirely. In 1986 the company buys approximately 20 percent of Alexander’s. Alexander’s is a retailer and owns an entire block of real estate in Manhattan. It becomes a REIT in 1993. Vornado, Inc. becomes Vornado Realty Trust that same year.
- The company buys Manhattan properties from Bernard Mendik in 1997 for a price of $654 million. In 2001 Vornado buys Charles E. Smith Commercial Realty with properties in Arlington, Virginia, for a price of $1.58 billion. A number of more companies are purchased and Vornado Realty Trust’s portfolio expands remarkably.
