Foreign exchange transactions have been restricted since the collapse of the banking system in 2008. In November 2008, the Rules on Foreign Exchange were adapted in agreement with temporary provisions in the Foreign Exchange Act. All restrictions on foreign exchange transactions in regards to goods and services were lifted, but very stringent limitations on the cross-border movement of capital and related foreign exchange transactions were imposed. In October 2016, amendments were passed and important steps taken towards easing restrictions on capital transactions with the new rules taking effect on in March 2017. Most restrictions on foreign exchange transactions and cross-border movement of domestic and foreign currency were effectively lifted.  The Rules on Foreign Exchange have been reviewed and amended several times.

 

Financial regulators in Iceland

 

Due to Iceland’s overall commitment to customer protection and the safety of the financial sector, the local Forex Market is strictly regulated. Icelandic Forex brokers fall under the direct management of the Financial Supervisory Authority ( FME), an extension of the Central Bank of Iceland.  The FME has set rules for each company who is involved in the financial sector. In turn, The Central Bank of Iceland is a body which single-handily oversees and issues the country’s monetary policy and regulates the exchange rates. Iceland is not an official member of the EU but the country  does fall under the regulations of the local bodies, as it is a part of the European Economic Area (EEA). This means that the local Forex regulations are guided by the standards issued by Europe’s Markets in Financial Directives Authority (MiFID) and the European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA).

 

Forex payment methods in Iceland

 

The Icelandic króna is the national currency of the country, with a code of ISK. Payment options available in Iceland are quite diverse and traders will generally be able to choose from debit and credit cards (Visa, MasterCard), a selection of e-wallets and PayPal. Another viable payment option which has become increasingly popular amongst  Icelandic traders is SEPA, which allows creditors to get payment directly from the user’s bank account.

Capital gains of Icelandic individuals are subject to Category C taxation at a rate of 22 percent.  However, Interest income lower than ISK150,000 per year is not subject taxed. For married couples, a double threshold will apply.

Income in the form of remuneration to non-resident directors and committee members is taxed by assessment at a rate of 20% plus the average municipal income tax rate, which is 14.45% in 2022.
