• In 1878 the company is founded by Sir Charles Cayzer as a shipping company and it soon becomes the largest cargo business in the world.

• In the early 1950’s it buys the Union-Castle business and forms the British & Commonwealth Shipping Company. It also buys Foreign Railways Investment Trust Ltd which was founded in 1928.

• Foreign Railways Investment is renamed Caledonia Investments Ltd. In 1955 Caledonia Investments purchases interests in British & Commonwealth Shipping.

• Caledonia lists on the London Stock Exchange in 1960.

• Its name changes from Caledonia Investments Ltd to Caledonia Investments plc in 1981.

• In 1987 the company’s interest in British & Commonwealth is purchased and it starts focusing more on investments and trading.

• In 2003 Caledonia becomes a United Kingdom investment trust company.
